“Electronic Texts”

Textbook Definition: Texts that are created and read on a computer screen (Pg. 378)



Description of the Lesson: The students had completed a Grammar lesson the previous week, and the teacher explained that she was not pleased
with the turnout of the grades. So, she decided to have them try it again, and then they would go over the lesson that was on the projector.



When it was Observed: September 12, 2011 (8:45 AM)



Teacher Observed & School: S. Brown, Faith West Academy



Grade Level: 5th Grade



Objectives of the Lesson: The student will be able to properly structure sentences, abbreviate, punctuate, and start a letter.



Materials Needed for the Lesson:
  • Computer
  • Overhead Projector
  • Dry Erase Marker
  • Pen
  • Paper



Procedure: Mrs. Brown utilized “electronic texts” by saving the Grammar worksheet on her computer so that she could display it in class for all of the students to see. The overhead projector displayed the Grammar worksheet, from the computer, on to the dry-erase board. The teacher allows a different student each time to walk up to the computer and bring up the worksheet on the computer. She instructed the class to sit at their desks and complete the Grammar lesson on their own sheet of notebook paper. Once the students had finished their individual work at their desks, the teacher called on a few of them to read the incorrect sentence and walk up to the front and correct them one-by-one. By observing the children correcting the sentences, the Mrs. Brown was able to assess if her students comprehending the lesson.

My Observations of the Lesson: The students worked very quickly and quietly. They were all eager to be called on by the teacher and correct the sentences. IT was evident that the students understood the lesson, because they corrected almost all of the sentences correctly. When one child would struggle, they were allowed to “phone a friend” to help them answer it correctly.
When the teacher appointed a child to correct a sentence, she did so randomly. If I were to alter anything at all, I would like to remove the selecting-process of choosing a child. Teachers can do this by “pulling names” or tell the students that students who are well-behaved will be chosen.



Benefits: “Electronic texts” are fluid, interactive, and engaging. Using the computer to show the lesson, allows the children to learn how to search and utilize files for school work. The success of this method was evident through the easiness of setting it up and the effectiveness of the outcome of the lesson. The assessment was also successful, because Mrs. Brown was able to assess whether the students were comprehending the lesson, and she was able to observe which students might need a little extra help.



Drawbacks: The only downside to using “electronic texts” is that there could be some sort of technological difficulties. In any event, a teacher can have a backup plan, and simply write it out on the board. Also, a student may struggle with using technology and may need a little assistance to help him or her learn. A drawback of the assessment might be that a student might feel nervous or pressured when walking up to the front of the class and answering the questions.
